Brazilian Wax -- What Really Happens? What's the Difference Between a Bikini Wax and a "Brazilian"?

Brazilian bikini waxes were introduced to New York in 1987 by seven Brazilian-born sisters and remains a popular hair removal method in the US.
The "Brazilian" differs from a regular bikini wax because hair is removed in the front, back and everything in between. Most of the time a "landing strip" is left in the front, but some clients opt for everything removed.
The "Brazilian" has most recently been in the press since the state of New Jersey announced in spring 2009 it may ban "genital waxing" after a couple residents were hospitalized with infections.

The Dos and Don’ts of Eyebrow Care:

The Dos and Don’ts of Eyebrow Care

It’s time to shape up – your eyebrows, that is! Eyebrows are the most underappreciated feature of your face, but they have the power to dramatically improve your look and enhance your natural beauty if groomed properly. Pioneer of eyebrow design Eliza Petrescu gives us the lowdown on getting gorgeous brows.

1. Go Pro.
We all love the DIY mentality, but Eliza strongly advises to seek a pro if you want your correct eyebrow shape. The major mistake women do is over pluck, specifically above the nose. “Your eyes will look smaller, your nose bigger, and you’ll have no arch. It’s so important to know that everything is a balance, and part of that is doing your eyebrows right,” she says.

While it’s recommended to get them done every four to six weeks, Eliza says you may go three or four times a year even, as long as you go to a professional.

2. Wax Away
Waxing is the best way to go and is all about creating a ‘look,’ whereas tweezing is just pulling hairs, Eliza points out. But don’t forget tip #1: turn to a pro! You can tweeze for maintenance as long as you don’t disrupt the arch. Make sure to pull them in the direction they grow. She also strongly suggests to NEVER tweeze the top of your eyebrow. Hair here is fuzz that needs to be professionally waxed.

Shape-up Tips for Your Eyebrows

Shape-up Tips for Your Eyebrows
According to stylist Maria De Los Aneles of Kim Lepine Salon in New York City, shaping your eyebrows is a beauty routine you shouldn’t skip. “It opens up your eye, giving you an eye-lift,” she says.”When you don’t shape your eyebrows, most of the hair grows where your brow bone is, making your eyes look saggy.” The shape of your eyebrows is most critical if your hair is short, she points out, because they become more visible, and your face is totally open. Women with longer hairstyles can get away with slightly thicker eyebrows; when the hairstyle is shorter, thinner, better-shaped eyebrows work best.
For optimum results, Maria suggests having your eyebrows done professionally. If you can’t afford it on a regular basis—the service can run from $30-$80 at the hairstyling salon—it’s a good idea to have them done at least once by a pro so you can get a good line. Then, you can follow it up at home using good tweezers. Maria recommends Tweezerman, which are available with both pointed and square tips. “Square tweezers are good for excessive hair growth and are easier to use; pointed are great for hard-to-reach eyebrow hair and for sculpting,” she explains.
Once you have the right tools, it’s time to start plucking. Begin by placing your index finger in the middle of your eye at the top of your eyebrow so you can see the eyebrow bone shape. See where it naturally becomes thinner and thicker. Pull the eyebrow in the direction in which it grows while tweezing—otherwise, you risk breaking off the follicle and ending up with little black dots, she warns.
Brush your eyebrows as you go—this prevents what Maria calls “tweezer frenzy”, which can leave you with a really weird facial expression! Be careful not to grab more than a hair at a time, and begin and end the eyebrow parallel to where your eye begins and ends.
Remember that you should examine your eyebrows every three to four days, since that’s how long it takes for new growth to come in.
